Cluck And Purr--The 2008 Spring Turkey Report
The 2008 Spring Rio season was not up to the normal Saltfork expectations. The season opened almost a week earlier than in
past years and the early opening combined with an unusually late spring was not conducive to good bird hunting. The first two weeks witnessed very little bird activity; they were not at all vocal and were reluctant
to come to call. As the season progressed the hunting improved but still left a lot to be desired; it became evident that we had an overabundance of jakes. Hunters would locate birds and have long beards respond
only to be inundated with gangs of jakes which would come in and actually intimidated the toms. This pattern was exacerbated by weather issues of wind and cold culminating in only about a 70% success rate for
the entire season with some weeks struggling to get 50%.
Barring and radical variances by Mother Nature, Spring 2009 should be a very good year. The roving bands of jakes should all be two year old long
beards. That should reestablish the more normal parameters of a Saltfork turkey hunt.
Thanks to all of you who hunted with us this last season and we appreciate your understanding of a very difficult
hunting year! We hope that the rest of your turkey hunting went well.
Think Long beards,
Bruce and Larry
